Renewal Sources of Energy in the Future

A Singapore recycling firm is looking at a future where used cooking oil can be turned into biofuel that can power a building. Local company Alpha Biofuels is taking a small step towards that goal at Raffles City Shopping Centre with a pilot project which gives the used oil a second lease of life. The facility, believed to be the first in a shopping mall, can produce up to 200 litres of biodiesel a day from used cooking oil.

What is Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is a replacement for diesel fuel that can be used in most diesel engines. It has properties that allow it to burn and perform similar to diesel fuel making it an ideal replacement to petroleum based diesel fuel.

How is the diesel fuel from petrol station produced?

Crude oil drawn from underground oil well is sent to the refinery. The crude oil undergoes a process of breaking down (fractionally distillation) into smaller and more useful products such as natural gas, petrol, diesel etc.

According to scientists, the world crude oil supply is limited. It may run out in the future.  So it is good for us to explore other sources of renewable energy such as using wind, running water and geothermal (heat from underground) as an alternative sources of energy.
